Popular Red Wine Varieties & What Food to Pair Them With
Australia’s most popular red, and styles can be as varied as our great land, depending on the climate in which it is grown. Generally speaking, shiraz is a medium to full-bodied red with bold and rich flavours of dark berries and spice notes. Shiraz (aka Syrah) grown in cooler climates can lean more towards a medium body and show more finesse and savoury flavours, whereas shiraz from warmer climates tends to be fuller-bodied and can display much more bold fruit forward flavours and robust savoury elements.
Food Pairing: BBQ red meat dishes, hamburgers, roast lamb or a hard cheese such as Gouda.
One of the world’s most planted varieties, Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied with dark berry flavours such as blackcurrant, complimented by green herbal notes and spice.
Food Pairing: Steak, braised beef dishes, roasted red meats and vegetables or a hard cheese like aged cheddar.
Good Pinot Noir is unforgettable, but Pinot Noir can be hard to grow and the better versions generally come from cooler climates in certain parts of the world. A lighter-bodied red with soft tannins, Pinot Noir shows cherry and raspberry fruits with an earthy edge.
Food Pairing: Duck, roast chicken, mushroom risotto and firm cheese such as Gruyere or goats cheese.
Thought to Originate from Spain where it is known as Garnacha, Grenache is most famously championed by growers of the Southern Rhone Valley in France, with the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale producing some of Australia’s best examples. A medium to full-bodied red, it is often blended with other grapes such as the popular ‘GSM’ (Grenache Shiraz, Mourvedre). Grenache typically displays plush strawberry and other red berried fruits, as well as tobacco, cinnamon spice and herbal notes.
Food Pairing: Grilled red meats, lightly spiced curry dishes, Spanish or Moroccan spiced foods, as well as Charcuterie or smoked gouda cheese.
